Day 2. Castiglione della Pescaia

Several centuries ago, there was Lake Prile, also known as Lake Castiglione, and now this place is one of the most important wetlands in Italy. A rare ecosystem is studied by biologists and ecologists from all over the world. In the pine forest reserve, you can walk or ride bicycles, therefore, there are convenient paths throughout the territory.

The multimedia museum conducts water tours of the reserve, during which you can see a variety of wildlife in the area. It is better to book a tour in advance on the museum website. The museum building was constucted in 1765 by the Italian mathematician and engineer Leonardo Jimenez to control the flow of water from the wetlands of Lake Castiglione into the Tyrrhenian Sea. The house is perfectly preserved even though it no longer fulfills its original function.

The forested area in the north of Castiglione della Pescaia is a great place for walking and exploring the flora of Maremma. The valley is crossed by hiking trails, but we still advise you to wear comfortable shoes, because the route runs through mountainous terrain.

Day 3. Roccastrada

Roccastrada is the land of hiking and walking tours. The borgo in the hilly province of Grosseto&nbsp;seems to float above endless countryside and forest land. The village of the 10th century has survived to this day in all its medieval charm. Walk along Via Contessa Giovanna, visit the parish chapel of San Nicola&nbsp;and relax in the shade of the Torre dell&#39;Orologio clock tower.

The family restaurant De Nada is the best choice when you want to enjoy excellent home cooking. Ask the waiter for a wild boar stewed in red wine, rabbit with a sprig of fragrant rosemary, a pie, or the traditional acquacotta vegetable soup. The dish was invented by Tuscan peasants, and there are several variations of acquacotta today in Italy.

The walk from the commune of Roccastrada to the ancient castle of Belagaio is one of the eight popular routes that is part of the Trekking Roccastrada, the network of hiking trails in this area with a total length of 146 kilometers. The road runs mainly through the forest and takes about four hours and along the way you can see interesting geological outcrops and giant oaks.

Belagaio is a traditional Tuscan country house. The medieval castle belonged to local aristocrats. The last owners, the Counts of Grottanelli, turned the castle into a farm in the 19th century. Today, Belagaio Castle is the center of the reserve, where horses of the ancient Maremmano breed are grown up today.

Maremma is famous for its numerous "educational" farms, where they teach how to care for animals, make cheese or understand the wild herbs that grow in these places. Lillastro is one such farm. The farm works in the agrotourism format, which means that you can stay here for several days or even weeks.
