The Solheimasandur plain was formed by the eruption of the Katla volcano hundreds of years ago. The black land stretches for kilometers to the Atlantic Ocean itself. The bleak landscape is complemented by the fuselage of a US Navy Douglas Super DC-3, which crash-landed at Solheimasandur Beach due to icing in 1973. Today, the ruins of the ship are a local «celebrity», which photographers and post-apocalyptic lovers are in a hurry to see.
